Aria the Animation: If you're into slice of life shows where absolutely nothing happens, you'll love this show too. After watching any single episode, you feel like you've just taken a nap, in a good way. I'd give it a '++', but there's this annoying "cat" that reminds me too much of Air TV's Potato. ++
Aria the Natural: This series picks up where Aria the Animation left off. Same deal: "After watching any single episode, you feel like you've just taken a nap, in a good way". Naps kick ass. ++
Asatte no Hokou: I'm a big fan of slice of life shows, and Asatte no Hokou doesn't disappoint. It's kind of like Freaky Friday, except better. It's also noteworthy that Shouko may qualify to make the list of characters who are almost as cool as me. +
Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto: Something about this show is oddly captivating, and I'm not just talking about the intro by Yuki Kajiura. For maximum enjoyment, be sure to brush up on your Japanese history while watching. ++
Bartender: This show is fantastic. Think Yakitate Japan + Alcohol Bread Bad Puns Tournament Competition + Slice of Life + Hatred/Suffering/Revenge. I don't think it's possible to describe it any better than that. +++
Binbou Shimai Monogatari: This has got to be the sappiest anime I've ever seen. It's still enjoyable though, and it serves another important role: softening me up for the gory action of Claymore. I checked it out because there's a character with Naomi Shindo's (Shizuru's) voice. She doesn't show up that often, but she's awesome when she does. +
Bleach: If you've never heard of Bleach before, I don't know what you've been doing with your life. Right now it's on a tolerable filler arc, but it'll probably move on within a few episodes. +
Bokura ga Ita: This is a typical teenage shoujo romantic-comedy, but production quality is so high these days that it somehow feels unique. I was won over when I saw the juiciest preview in the history of anime. If I remember correctly, there's a failed confession, someone dies, and someone gets called a whore. +
Busou Renkin: "This is a warning. Busou Renkin is an awesome series, but the evil guy is very gay and loves to wear practically nothing. By far the gayest and most disgusting bad guy I've seen in anime. Watch at your own risk. I advise turning off episode 17 at 20:52." - Ghetto +
Claymore: Such a badass show. Definitely the most painful weeklong episode wait I've had to suffer through in a long time. One of these days I'm going to break down and read the manga. UPDATE: I broke down and read the manga. +++
Code Geass: Reiko-chan was whining because I hadn't mentioned this show on my website. Since I have my own list of shows to watch (see Texhnolyze), I don't usually respond quickly to fan recommendations, but Code Geass has such a catchy intro by FLOW that I had to watch it. Unfortunately, the second intro is by Jinn, the crappy band that did the 4th Blood+ intro. Anyway, this is one of those series that gets more intense with every episode. Pick your favorite giant robot show, add the tactics of Death Note, the stylistic touch of Scryed/Infinite Ryvius, the shameless advertisements of City Hunter, and while we're at it, a random cat. ++
Darker Than Black: Now that they've given the grey-haired girl some screen time and added a touch of self-parody, I can forgive all that contractor/remuneration/doll/moratorium/@nifty/pizza hut crap. ++
Death Note: WATCH DEATH NOTE. I've already read the manga and given it a full review. +++
Denno Coil: Every kid on this show needs a beating. Otherwise it's excellent. +++
Devil May Cry: Dante finally gets his own anime. I have no idea what direction it'll take, but if it's anything like the video games, the plot won't matter. +
Doujin Work: Remember that scene from Rec in which Aka is embarrassed about buying porn? They turned that into an entire series and called it Doujin Work. +
El Cazador de la Bruja: This show isn't necessarily bad. It's just bland, forgettable, and pedophilic. Good music though. ~
Elfen Lied: Three years ago Ghetto said this show was about "naked people and tits...I mean...naked girl and blood". Definitely didn't want to watch it in front of my roommates, so now I'm watching it dubbed in the privacy of my own apartment. +++
Ergo Proxy: The creators of Ergo Proxy sought to do the impossible: create an anime more even more pretentious than their previous work, Cowboy Bebop. At least this one has a continuous plot. ++
Eyeshield 21: Great sports anime, already reviewed it. ++
Fooly Cooly: People keep telling me it's a classic, but I've also been told that I won't be able to fully appreciate the series until I see the whole thing twice. There's a lot of audio and visual candy, but I never found the show engaging. ~
Gakuen Alice: This show is money. It's about a girl who gets comically victimized at an academy for kids with superpowers. Unfortunately, episodes were rarely subbed, and by rarely, I'm talking in the ballpark of once every three months. Gakuen Alice deserved better. ++
Genshiken 2: Three years ago I dropped the first season because I felt uncomfortable watching it in front of my roommates. This season is twice as risqu. +
Hidamari Sketch: Think Azumanga Daioh with an artsy twist and a less diverse cast of characters. Plus, if you download it from Shintani-subs (the only group fansubbing it right now), you'll get some comical fansubber comments. +
Higurashi ni Naku Koro ni: What was the best show of Spring 2006: Haruhi, Nana, School Rumble S2, Ouran, or Simoun? Trick question the answer is Higurashi. This show is amazing, unless you're a pussy. As long as it finishes well, it's going down as one of my all-time favorites. +++
Higurashi ni Naku Koro ni Kai: Please don't cancel this show. +++
Idolm@ster Xenoglossia: Teenage girls piloting robots with feelings. Honestly, it's not that bad. +
Jigoku Shoujo Futakomori: This is the second season of Jigoku Shoujo, which I've already reviewed. I'd say it was slightly better than the first season, except for that annoying little girl they threw in for no reason. +
Kanon (2002): Pretty good, but the 2006 version is better. +
Kanon (2006): I'm seriously impressed. It could've easily gone down the same path as Air, but they did pretty much everything in their power to keep me from being bored. ++
Karin: I've considered and rejected this show several times. Then I saw its manga marketed as Chibi-Vampire and suddenly became curious. It's surprisingly good, and halfway through the series, the comedy still hasn't gone downhill. +
Kenko Zenrakei Suieibu Umisho: As a former competitive swimmer, I can totally relate to this show, even the 3% of it that isn't fanservice. Totally brainless, but good for some cheap laughs. +
Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora: This was a must watch because it's a spinoff of Kannazuki no Miko. Much like Kannazuki no Miko, it's a lot of unexplained action with a satisfying ending. If you've seen Kannazuki no Miko, this is worth checking out, but objectively: ~
Legend of Galactic Heroes: Epic. +++
Lucky Star: Gotta love the intro. The show itself is mediocre, and I don't get most of the jokes, but damn, the intro is awesome. +
Mai Otome Zwei (OVA): No ShizNat, no focus, no reason to care. ~~
Maria-sama ga Miteru Spring: What?! There's a sequel?! Sweet, and to think I was planning to write a page on why Maria-sama ga Miteru should've been longer. The show is kind of girly, but not in the bitchy catty backstabbing way. +
Maria-sama ga Miteru (OVA): There are half as many episodes, but each episode is twice as long. Each episode gets its own self-parody clip (instead of the usual self-parody clip per two episodes), but each episode is twice as long. I guess it all evens out. +
Minami-ke: This show reminds of my life, except with happiness, comical victimization, and other people. ++
Nana: Nana is the best romance anime I've ever seen. Great style, great dialogue, great music. +++
Negima!?: This is the second season of the show. Production quality has taken an enormous leap forwards, and although I haven't read the manga (mainly because it's shrink-wrapped in all the bookstores as though it were xxx porn), I've heard good things about where this series is headed. It's a bit of a kiddie-harem, but it's still fun to watch, even if you're not a pedophile. +
Nodame Cantabile: This is a great show, and I hear that the live action version is even better. Don't worry about the female lead she gets less annoying as the series goes on. ++
Prince of Tennis: National Championship Chapter (OVA): There's no point in watching this OVA if you haven't already seen the Prince of Tennis TV series. Otherwise you can't afford miss it. I don't want to spoil too much. Let's just say that in the first episode, an old man gets socked in the face. ++
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei: Finally, a show about a guy who wants to kill himself. This is the best anime comedy I've seen...ever? ++
School Days: Makoto had it coming. +
Seirei no Moribito: These days it's rare to see a character as manly as Balsa. It's rare to see one as hot as her too, but that's just my opinion as a non-pedophilic heterosexual male. X++
Sensei no Ojikan/Doki Doki School Hours: My cold streak of failing to identify voice actors came to an end when I called Mika-sensei as Euphemia and Suetake as Inu Yasha. Anyway, this is another show in that Azumanga Daioh genre. It's nothing special, but hey, you don't always want to watch anime that requires mental effort. +
Seto no Hanayome: Karin - Vampires + Mermaids +
Simoun: I started watching Simoun back in the spring and reviewed it during the summer. Although it took nearly a year to be completely subbed, I have to give a lot of credit to Simoun-Fans for being the only group to sub this badass show while other groups were too busy ripping Hellsing for the billionth time. Long story short: Simoun = Last Exile + Lesbians. ++
Strawberry Panic: This is an average show about a transfer student at an all-girls high school with lesbians. The great thing about anime is that binging on average shows is still more fun than hanging out with your friends during winter break. +
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Nonstop action. ++
Texhnolyze: Dark? Yes. Violent? Yes. ++
Trinity Blood: It's been great so far. It'd be even better if the intro and ending weren't cut short by Cartoon Network. I've heard the show described as "a threesome between Hellsing, Chrono Crusade, and Trigun". Sounds about right. ++
xxxHOLiC: This loser named Watanuki is too much of a pussy to deal with evil spirits, so he asks Yuko (the same Yuko from Tsubasa Chronicle) to get rid of them for him. Yuko takes the opportunity to make Watanuki her slave. Then she spends each episode ripping people off and getting drunk with the black Mokona. Some episodes are better than others, but the bad outweights the good. ~
